Tips to help you manage parking at UNF

As part of BetterPark, our campaign to help you manage parking issues, Parking & Transportation Services has developed a list of tips. Some apply to everyone; some are just meant for students, just faculty and staff or just visitors.

Tips for everyone

Before you buy

There are new types of permits for 2007-2008. Some lots have been closed and new ones opened. There's a new Shuttle service called the Opsrey Connector. Check out the new map. Most everything you need to know is on this Web site.

Allow more time or, better yet, plan to park in the outer lots during peak times: Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and all day Tuesday and Thursday.

It takes a very predictable two seconds to find a spot in Lot 18 or 53 and grab the Shuttle to the center of campus. It can take a very unpredictable 15 or 30 minutes circling the inner lots and garages to maybe save a few minutes walking to your destination.Try Lot 18 or 53, and see if it doesn’t save you time.

Lot 18 always has lots of spots. You can get to Lot 18 from either St. Johns Bluff or Beach Boulevard via Central Parkway.  And now you can go directly to Lot 18 via the new North-South Road from UNF Drive.

Trying to stay in shape? A 150-pound person making a brisk walk from Lot 18 to the bookstore burns about 52 calories. That’s half a Coke.

After you buy

Don’t throw your ticket in the back seat with the fast food bags and forget about it. Some things won’t improve with time. Be sure to pay your ticket within 14 calendar days.

If you get a ticket on a Tuesday, 14 calendar days is the second Monday, not the second Tuesday. Don’t get caught being a day late with your payment.

If your parking permit is stolen, you can get a new one from Parking & Transportation Services by filing a police report and paying a $10 replacement fee.

If you break your leg, get a “temporary immobility” Permit from Parking & Transportation Services so you can park in the disabled spots closer to campus.

If your primary car is in the shop, you can get a temporary permit for your second car or loaner from Parking & Transportation Services.

If you have a decal and your windshield gets broken (or if you sell your car), you can get another decal for $10. Bring the decal or the pieces of it to Parking & Transportation Services.

Tips just for students

Before you buy

Buy your permit as soon after permits go on sale. Don’t wait, because some of the more desirable permits run out. You can always purchase a Discount Permit.

You don’t have to wait in line to buy a Discount Permit that allows you to park in Lots 18 and 53. They are always available.

Save some dough. Discount Permits are much cheaper.

If possible, schedule your classes away from the peak times: Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and all day on Tuesday and Thursday. Parking lots and garages aren’t so crowded in the late afternoon and evening or on Friday.

Even if your classes start at 10:00 a.m., come to campus at 8:00 or 9:00 and study in the library or the Matthews computer lab. You’re more likely to find a good spot and be better prepared for class, too.

After you buy

Pay your ticket or file an appeal within 14 calendar days. If you are late, you won’t be able to register for classes or get a transcript.

Tips just for faculty and staff

Before you buy

Save some dough. Discount Permits are much cheaper.

You can pay for your parking permit with a 24-payment payroll deduction.

Faculty and Staff have priority for 1st Floor Garage permits.

Faculty and staff may make arrangements, in advance, for their visitors to receive a “registered guest” parking permit.

After you buy

If you are a 9-month faculty or staff employee using the 24-payment plan for your parking permit, be sure to turn it in at the end of the year and stop your payments!

Tips just for visitors

Before you buy

You don’t need a parking permit on Saturdays or Sundays unless there is a special event on campus.

Even if you bought a ticket to the Fine Arts Center or for a ball game, you still need to purchase a $3.00 Premium Daily Permit from the Information Booths Monday through Friday.

If you are just dropping off a camper (up to 30 minutes before the start of camp) at the designated location or picking up (up to one hour after the camp is finished) at the designated location, you don’t need to purchase a Daily Permit.

After you buy

Visitors to campus must abide by the UNF rules and regulations or risk getting a ticket.  Please pay that ticket within 14 calendar days.
